STAIND's AARON LEWIS To Texas Crowd: 'I Don't Know How To Speak Spanish. I'm American.' (Video)
February 3, 2019STAIND frontman Aaron Lewis cut his country solo concert short Saturday night (February 2) at the Pharr Events Center in Pharr, Texas after he unsuccessfully attempted to quiet the crowd.
Videos posted online show Lewis asking the audience members to lower their chatter before a song.
"I'm gonna try to do something different and special, but you're not gonna hear it if you're not quiet," he added. "No, you don't understand — like fucking church! Quiet.
"I'm only gonna wait for so long, and then I'm just gonna say 'good night.'"
After waiting a few more seconds for the crowd to respond, Lewis continued: "I don't understand what you're not getting. I know I have a microphone, so you can hear me. You're not gonna hear the song unless it's this quiet."
"Tell them in Spanish," one woman suggested before another man shouted, "In español."
Aaron responded: "I'm sorry. I don't know how to speak Spanish. I'm American."
Lewis then made a keep-quiet gesture, putting his finger on his mouth, before strumming a few chords on his guitar. When the crowd refused to stop talking, the visibly agitated singer abruptly stopped, checked his watch and returned to the mic.
"Thank you very much. Have a great night," he said before walking off stage to boos.
According to Data USA, Pharr is roughly 94% Hispanic and 6% white.
This was not the first time Lewis's clash with an audience member has been gone viral.
Two months ago, a video surfaced of Lewis cursing at an Indianapolis concert-goer for calling out song titles while he was singing. "See that bald motherfucker right there," Aaron told the Indianapolis crowd. Make sure his walk out to his fucking car this evening is not that enjoyable."
Lewis, who is widely considered to be one of the most politically conservative musicians in rock, was a staunch critic of President Barack Obama, telling a crowd at one of his solo concerts in 2016: "Barack Obama should have been impeached a long fucking time ago. Every fucking decision he makes is against the Constitution, it's against what's good for our fucking country, and he is truly the worst fucking president that we have ever had in the history of this fucking country."
That same year, Lewis told Billboard that he would support Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential race, even though he was "disappointed" by the real estate mogul "with the bickering and the name-calling." Lewis added that he voted for Senator Ted Cruz, Trump's closest competitor in the Republican nomination race, in the Massachusetts primary.
The STAIND frontman first dipped his toes into country music with his 2011 EP, "Town Line". His second full-length album, "Sinner", arrived in the fall of 2016 and was followed by a stand-alone single, "Folded Flag".
Lewis will release his third full-length country album, "State I'm In", on April 12 via Big Machine imprint Valory Music.
One attendee of Saturday night's Aaron Lewis concert in Pharr provided this video, in which he can be heard saying around the 1:44 mark, "I'm sorry, I don't know how to speak Spanish. I'm American," in response to people shouting to speak to them in Spanish. Though attempting to quiet concertgoers, Lewis' remarks only provoked more crowd noise before he eventually walked off stage.
